Neuropsychology

What is neuropsychology?

It is the scientific discipline that studies the relationship between the brain and our behavior. That is, how our brain structures influence what we think, feel, or do.

Neuropsychology focuses on cognitive functions and on how these can be affected by normal aging or by other processes or conditions.

What are cognitive functions?

Cognitive functions are the mental processes that allow us to receive, process, elaborate, and retrieve information. In other words, they are the tools our brain uses to interact with the world around us, to solve any problem, and to maintain our autonomy.

Cognitive functions are the following:

Attention

the filter that allows us to select relevant information and ignore distractions.

Memory

the ability to record, store, and retrieve information.

Language

the ability to communicate with others. It includes expression, comprehension, reading, and writing.

Gnosias

they allow us to identify the information that reaches us through the senses.

Praxias

the ability to carry out new or learned movements with a specific purpose.

Executive functions

they are the brain’s “orchestra conductor.” They include the most complex mental functions, such as planning, the ability to inhibit impulses, problem-solving, or cognitive flexibility, among others.

When should we consult a neuropsychology professional?

  • Memory problems
  • Difficulties with attention and concentration
  • Early detection of a neurodegenerative process (such as Alzheimer’s disease)
  • If there is suspicion of cognitive impairment or dementia
  • In the case of acquired brain injury: stroke, traumatic brain injury, tumor, hydrocephalus…
Our brain is the engine of everything we are. Understanding how it works is the first step toward improving our well-being.

What services do we offer in neuropsychology?

U

Neuropsychological assessment

uses validated tests and scales to evaluate cognitive functions

More Information

It allows us to:

  • detect which functions are impaired and which are preserved
  • contribute to making an etiological diagnosis
  • design a personalized treatment plan for rehabilitation or cognitive stimulation
  • assess progress
  • offer guidance to the patient and their family members

Cognitive rehabilitation or stimulation

individual treatment sessions with the aim of improving or maintaining impaired cognitive functions

More Information

individual treatment sessions with the aim of improving or maintaining impaired cognitive functions, strengthening preserved ones, or teaching techniques or strategies to compensate for deficits, in order to improve the person’s quality of life and promote their autonomy.
